So why does the latter claim to be the oldest continually held sporting event in the United States? While the Kentucky Derby has been held every single year since its founding inthe Belmont Stakes cannot claim that distinction. Owners realized that racing and wagering were so intertwined that, without gambling, attendance would be too low to allow them to make money. For two years, horse racing in the state roulette wheel for fun. But a loophole would save the industry: Horse racing was still legal, and while the law banned bookmaking, the law said nothing about wagers between friends.
